About Me

When I’m not teaching English or writing stories, you can find me biking or running on Czech trails, looking for mushrooms, or skiing in the mountains. In summer, my family likes camping, rafting, and paddle-boarding in the Czech Republic (and beyond). Although we love to explore new places, visits to my US hometown are also favorite travel experiences. Read More

...
As we walked through the forest down to the town of Spindlruv Mlyn, we followed the Bilé Labe river (whose mouth comes from the Elbe River). Along the way, a “naučná stezka,” an educational nature trail, explained the historical significance of the man-made dams/waterfalls we passed.
After a river flood in the late 1800s caused extensive damage and took the lives of 120 local citizens in the valley, a damming project was undertaken. In 1901-02, 100 prisoners from local jails were enlisted build rock walls across the river at various intervals to slow the water’s flow. At the top of the project, there were a few square stones and a plaque marking the blacksmith’s workshop where the stones were shaped into blocks. Apart from the first sign, the educational signs were in Czech only, so I double-checked what I read with Radek and the kids to make sure.
...
Of course, the boys had to try the water for themselves, just to see how cold it was. Bonus: along the river were wild blueberry bushes with tiny, very tart berries.

All smiles after an all-day hike along the ridges All smiles after an all-day hike along the ridges of the Krkonose Mountains on the Czech-Polish border with views of Snezka Mtn, Czechia’s highest peak, in the distance. Parts of the trail reminded us of Mt. Rogers in Southwest Virginia while the riverbeds and views reminded us of walking down in Yellowstone’s canyons. We talked, we laughed, and we grumbled (after slipping accidentally into the river and tripping over some of the larger boulders on the downhill trek). The last time we were up in these mountains, my mom was with us, and we had fun remembering our adventure here with her, too. #mountainhike, #krkonosenationalpark, #outdoorkids, #hikingwithkids, #czechtrails, #raisingrippers, #halfnhalfprague

Afterward, Anna gave us a lesson in roasting marshmallows and we finished the night with an awesome sunset. #czechcamping, #machovojezero #travelczechia, #familycampingadventures⛺️
Cooking and food preparation has risen to new leve Cooking and food preparation has risen to new levels in the past months. When we have adventured, we’ve often packed our own meals and snacks. My favorite cookbook (yes, I still prefer a hardbound book to an internet recipe) is called, “Run Fast. Cook Fast. Eat Slow.” It’s co-authored by @shaleneflanagan and @elysekopecky and gives tips on how to combine rigorous exercise with healthy eating. In addition to this Thai Salad, we rotate their Sweet Potato Pancakes, Spinach Frittata and Superfoods Soup weekly. Swipe left to see Anna making Apple Cheddar Scones. Many of my favorite recipes call for grated veggies. I’d like to update my handheld grater and potentially save time and counter mess cleanup. Any tips? #runfasteatslow, #spicythaisalad, #tonightsdinnertomorrowslunch

The steep “Spaghetti trail” under the slope was tougher for us than ideal, but in spite of two small wipeouts (one for each boy) we kept going and had fun. #horyzahorem #jestedbikepark, #bikeczech, #sundayoutdoors
