About Me

When I’m not teaching English or writing stories, you can find me biking or running on Czech trails, looking for mushrooms, or skiing in the mountains. In summer, my family likes camping, rafting, and paddle-boarding in the Czech Republic (and beyond). Although we love to explore new places, visits to my US hometown are also favorite travel experiences. Read More

With -12C temperatures, but clear skies and not mu With -12C temperatures, but clear skies and not much wind, conditions were ripe for another cross-country skiing adventure in the Czech mountains. After yet one more week sitting at home hunched our computers for online school and work, spending time outdoors gave our bodies and minds a much needed reboot. Sliding on our skis under snow-laden evergreens, picnicking outdoors and moving my legs and arms (continuously!) to stay warm, I felt alive again. Each time we spend the day outdoors, I feel a momentary reprieve from my pandemic anxiety, worries and fears. #snowtherapy, #wintertimeinczech, #czechtrails, #bežky, #halfnhalfprague
FINALLY ... we made it to the Czech mountains for FINALLY ... we made it to the Czech mountains for a day of socially distanced cross-country skiing. Swipe right to see Sam and Oli in video action. After more than two weeks of home quarantine (not even getting out for our daily walks), we were so happy to spend the day in the fresh air. No one (except for me) even complained about cold hands. ❄️❄️🧤🧤🤍🤍
Seeing the wild ponies and climbing the boulders a Seeing the wild ponies and climbing the boulders at #graysonhighlandsstatepark has become a beloved New Year’s tradition. This particular visit reminded me of a Dad & Daughters overnight one summer when we hiked a section of the AT in Grayson Highlands and slept out under the stars. When I told my youngest, he said he’d like to hike the whole AT one day. Sometime when he finishes school and before he buys a house 😁.
After 12 months apart, getting to see my parents a After 12 months apart, getting to see my parents and my brother’s family was my children’s biggest wish of 2020.
In the days leading up to our trip, I wondered if we would make it. And, moreover, if we should. But, we wore our masks, we quarantined, we tested negative, and we did the same thing all over again when we arrived in the US.
Taking these pictures on the beach on the next to last day of the year was an unexpected highlight in a year filled unprecedented highs and lows. Getting to hug my mom and dad in real life, after a year of only communicating via Viber or Zoom, and watching my children goof off with their cousins filled my heart with joy.
Wishing our friends and family a safe and healthy start to a fresh new year. 🍀🍀🍀
Our annual Christmas Day afternoon hike to Molly’s Knob seemed too ambitious this year (due to cold temps) so we settled for a snowy walk through Hungry Mother State Park. Can you tell we were super excited to see fresh snow?! ❄️❤️

Happy Sunday! 🌲🍁 A day for dancing on hay b Happy Sunday! 🌲🍁
A day for dancing on hay bales (swipe left), throwing pebbles into a mountain stream, and chasing my boys and my girl on bike through the forests of Czechia.
After a tense week waiting for election results, lots of conversations about how the Electoral College works, what absentee ballots are, and why this US Presidential election is being watched with such fervent intensity around the world, it was refreshing to spend two days losing ourselves in the beauty of the Czech mountains.
Here’s to the American people who turned up to vote (regardless of party) in greater numbers than ever in our lifetimes. Here’s to playing fair and being kind to others in the aftermath of the election, especially those who share different beliefs, lifestyles and traditions. Here’s to our first female Vice President-elect, Kamala Harris. May she be an example to our daughters and our sons of what is possible in their own futures.
