About Me

When I’m not teaching English or writing stories, you can find me biking or running on Czech trails, looking for mushrooms, or skiing in the mountains. In summer, my family likes camping, rafting, and paddle-boarding in the Czech Republic (and beyond). Although we love to explore new places, visits to my US hometown are also favorite travel experiences. Read More

Happy Mother’s Day to my beautiful, adventurous Happy Mother’s Day to my beautiful, adventurous Mom❤️
Over the years, she’s traveled many places to be with my family and she’s cared for us in a myriad of ways (from prepping spaghetti sauce to doing algebra via Viber long distance with Oliver). She particularly loves re-organizing my shelves, visiting the local flower shop and taking walks. She’s a great cheerleader and we love her dearly!

🥹 smiling through tears that I am old enough to be celebrated by nearly grown up children who still sing, “Happy Birthday, dear Mommy”
🌴 balancing on a coconut tree with my boys (because I am not too old yet to climb trees, right?)
✍️ on the cusp of my birthday, a dear friend and writing teacher sent me the following message: Hold on to your heart.  Hold on to it gently, but hold on to it and don't let go.
🗺️As I continue to explore this big and beautiful (but often cruel and frightening) world, my birthday wish this year extends to each of you.
❤️Find your heart. Whether it is your family, your creativity, your work, your community, your sport, or something else. Find your heart and hold it close.
P.S. The last sunset pic is my “commute” walk home from the neighboring village where I teach English to 1st -5th graders in a Czech elementary school.
🏠Whether near or far from home, each day, I am still learning to hold on to my heart.
Most waterfall hikes in Costa Rica have an entranc Most waterfall hikes in Costa Rica have an entrance fee that both supports ecological tourism and helps locals benefit from the country’s near constant influx of visitors. This particular hike/waterfall/swimming hole in the coastal town of Uvita (near the whale’s tail national park) cost 2000 colones or $3.70 per visitor. We stayed about an hour and the thrill of seeing the kids climb and slide was well worth it. If you swipe to the last shot, you’ll find me happily treading water (no climbing or sliding yet for my still healing leg). 💦#costaricawaterfallhike, #uvitawaterfallslide

We didn’t quite stay for sunset as we didn’t want to risk getting stranded out on the rocks. #scavengers, #sharpeyes, #beachhike #elroblecostarica
After we spent the morning in the Monteverde cloud After we spent the morning in the Monteverde cloud reserve, we went looking for some off the beaten track fun. We found a hanging ficus tree natural bridge (which of course all the kids begged to walk across). It was wet, slippery and I didn’t think our travel insurance would cover any mishaps, so scrambling to the top was as far as they got. Anna isn’t pictured because we had to tie her hands to keep her from climbing too.🙊
In 2001 (while living in San Francisco) I wrote Co In 2001 (while living in San Francisco) I wrote Costa Rica in my bucket list of must-see destinations. It seemed a lot more feasible as a recent college graduate living in California than as a family of five traveling from the Czech Republic. But here we are at last! These shots are from Arenal Volcano & Rio Fortuna (thermal river waters from the lava). The snake is an eyelash viper and supposedly Costa Rica’s most poisonous.
